The classic approach to monitoring your home on your own is to use a video camera that can be connected directly to a home network without the aid of a PC.

Vincent Pacienza, 54, pleaded not guilty in court Wednesday to one count of second-degree unlawful surveillance, the charge reportedly handed down by a Nassau County grand jury on Oct. 29.
Fears are rising that IP cameras can and willl be hacked. At Defcon, a demonstration showed an IP camera's feed intercepted and replaced by a fraudulent video, allowing a hypothetical suspect to steal an object right in front of the surveillance camera; thus bringing Hollywood to 'real life.'
The camera and a related motion detector were set up by officials at the Hillsides Children's Center in Los Angeles County in 2002 in a bid to find out who was looking at pornography late at night on a computer in the office.
